All soft drinks are beverages, but not all beverages are soft drinks. The beverage industry goes beyond soft drinks to include bottled water, fruit juices, sports drinks, iced tea, and energy drinks as examples of non-alcoholic beverages, with restaurants and convenience stores typically being the most common outlets.

Soft drinks are non-alcoholic carbonated and non-carbonated beverages that usually contain artificial flavors and sweeteners, including sugar or high fructose corn syrup. However, some healthier alternatives do exist, such as sugar substitutes like stevia and chicory root extract, to name a few.

What is Food?

Macronutrients provide calories and help build cells and tissues. Micronutrients are necessary for the proper functioning of the human body.

  5. Beverages, however, are liquids that typically contain dissolved solids such as sugar or salt.

What are Beverages?

  9. Another type of food to consider is carbohydrates which provide energy during exercise.
  10. Examples of carbohydrates include whole grains like oats or brown rice and fruits like bananas or dried fruit like apricots or raisins.
  11. Fats also play a role in your diet and should be eaten sparingly.
  12. Fats contain many essential nutrients, but too much fat can lead to obesity, heart disease, and other chronic diseases like diabetes.
  13. There are three main categories of fats: saturated fats, unsaturated fats, and trans fats.
