When it comes to keeping up with your labs, there are two main options in the healthcare industry right now: ObsidianMD and Logseq. It’s no secret that both of these services offer lab tracking and record-keeping through an easy-to-use interface, but there are some key differences between them that you should know about before signing up for either one.
If you’re looking to switch providers or trying to decide which one is right for you, look no further! We’ve done all the research so you don’t have to. Here’s what we found out.
What is Obsidian.md?
an open-source platform for storing and sharing genomic data such as amplicon sequencing, single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotyping, and diagnostic workflows. This system is intended to be an alternative to GeneDrop, a proprietary vendor service that gives access to users of Illumina sequencers only.
Why Obsidian? It has been created by scientists as a more open alternative to GeneDrop, which prevents users from easily exchanging their data on other platforms or with other biologists.
What is Logseq?
The faster algorithm, but less accuracy. Uses linear discriminant analysis on principal components to determine the probability of different diseases (classification problem). Has its flavor of Gensim and sklearn, specific to NLP (Natural Language Processing) and Ngrams (the study of words in a language.)
It is also faster than Obsidian.MD because it doesn’t rely on any external software or packages for processing text data. It uses only Python 2.7 and NumPy, so if you are interested in learning how to use Python with Machine Learning algorithms, then I would recommend using Logseq as your first project because you will learn how all these things work together.
What’s the difference?
One of these tools could be more right for you depending on your business goals and objectives; here are a few tips for comparing them before making a decision about which one to use. Read on to find out more about each option, so you can decide which of these two tools is best for your needs.
Molecular diagnostics: Obsidian.md vs. Logseq
Molecular diagnostics aims to improve patient care and clinical outcomes through early detection, treatment, and better prediction of a disease outcome. Molecular testing is typically performed on tumor tissue obtained from surgery or biopsy (if possible), or at best directly from a blood sample or other body fluid.
In contrast to conventional histopathology tests, which analyze only one aspect of cancer biology, molecular tests can identify multiple genetic mutations in a single test. Molecular diagnostic tests are becoming increasingly important for cancer patients as they allow doctors to determine more accurately how advanced a particular cancer is and whether it will respond well to treatment.
For example, by analyzing gene expression patterns with PCR-based microarrays, it is possible to predict with high accuracy whether breast cancer patients will respond positively or negatively to chemotherapy before they start treatment.
Bioinformatics platform: Obsidian.md vs. Logseq
Bioinformatics is a great way to make sense of complicated genomic data, but it can be overwhelming for new users without easy access to bioinformatics databases and software. Many groups are working on open-source solutions, including some at UC Davis that integrate HPC clusters and cloud environments.
But even if you’re not an expert in bioinformatics, you can still use these platforms to run your analyses or collaborate with other researchers. Here’s a quick comparison of two of these tools—one developed by UC Davis researchers—that might help you decide which one works best for your needs.
Features and functionality: Obsidian.md vs. Logseq
Both of these apps have tons of features, but there are some notable differences in functionality. Obsidian is one of my personal favorites because it has a built-in auto-updater, code snippets, and auto-complete code function (plus many more). It’s also easier to view your team history on Obsidian than it is with Logseq—you can simply click on a teammate’s name to get an outline of their contributions to your current project so far.
They are pretty different, but both are still in development so neither has fully reached its full potential yet. However, ObsidianMD seems to be gaining a lot of attention lately as well as controversy due to some very questionable business practices (see more at: ). LogSeq seems like an overall better product right now, with cleaner functionality and faster outputs (which is kind of surprising because it’s older).
